Understanding the patterns that shape your life

Location: San Francisco, CA

Setting: In-Person & Telehealth (CA)

I’m Richard Kelly, a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist at Eureka Center for Psychotherapy. Before becoming a therapist, I spent years working in the corporate world. An unexpected career change during the pandemic ultimately brought me into this work sooner than I had planned.

That experience shaped how I understand the distance that can develop between how capable we appear on the outside and what may be happening internally. I work with people who feel anxious, depressed, burned out, disconnected, or simply stuck — including those who have spent a long time trying to think, work, or push their way out of what they are experiencing.

My style is engaged, collaborative, and direct. I’m interested in getting beyond surface-level fixes and understanding what is actually driving a pattern. At the same time, therapy should be useful in real life. Our work can include both deeper exploration and practical ways of responding differently outside the therapy room.

I work with adults and couples, including LGBTQ+ clients, men and male-identifying clients, and people in monogamous, open, and polyamorous relationships.

Approach

My work draws primarily from Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

IFS gives us a way to understand the different parts of ourselves that can take over when we feel threatened, ashamed, overwhelmed, or uncertain — the inner critic, the anxious part, the angry part, the part that shuts down. Rather than treating those responses as something to eliminate, we can become curious about how they developed and what they have been trying to do for us.

ACT helps us notice when difficult thoughts and emotions begin organizing our lives. The goal is not simply to feel better at all times, but to develop more freedom in how we respond and move toward what matters even when discomfort is present.

Because people are complex, I don’t expect one model to fit everyone. I adapt the work to the person in front of me rather than asking the person to fit the model.

Therapeutic Philosophy

“The goal is not to eliminate every difficult thought or feeling, but to have more choice in how we live alongside them.”
