A Step Toward Steady Ground.

People often come to individual therapy when anxiety is taking up too much space, grief has changed everyday life, or relationships and loneliness keep becoming harder to navigate.

Loneliness & Relationship Patterns

Your mind keeps scanning for what comes next. Rest can be hard, even when you’re exhausted, and the goalposts may keep moving no matter how much gets done.

Loss can alter the shape of everyday life. Therapy can make room for what has changed without rushing you toward closure or asking you to carry it neatly.

You may feel alone even around other people, struggle to ask for help, avoid conflict, or keep finding yourself in familiar patterns of closeness and distance.

Individual therapy for anxiety, grief, loneliness, and relationship loss and challenges.

Sometimes you know exactly what brings you to therapy. Other times, something just doen't feel right and you can't put your finger on it. Anxiety may be harder to switch off, relationships may keep getting stuck in familiar places, or you may find yourself going through the motions of a life that no longer feels quite like your own. We help clients understand the patterns keeping them stuck and make changes that are meaningful and lasting.

When it’s hard to slow down

It can become surprisingly hard to switch off. Life may start to feel like a series of things to manage — work, responsibilities, relationships, the next problem, the next deadline. You may feel keyed up and exhausted at the same time, avoid conflict because there is already too much to manage, or feel lonely even when other people are around. And no matter how much gets accomplished, the goalposts can seem to keep moving.

For many people, these ways of moving through the world have deep roots. You may have learned early to stay on top of things, anticipate problems, or become remarkably self-reliant. Those capacities can serve you well, while also making it harder to ask for help, depend on others, or simply let your guard down.

Competence can make it harder for others — and sometimes for us — to notice the strain

We all develop ways of protecting ourselves, staying connected, and getting through what life asks of us. Over time, some of those patterns can begin to keep us stuck — making closeness, rest, desire, or a sense of belonging harder to reach. Therapy can help you understand what keeps getting in the way and begin responding differently, without treating those patterns as failures.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of concerns do people bring to individual therapy?

People come to Eureka for anxiety, self-criticism, loneliness, grief, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and a sense of feeling stuck or disconnected from themselves. You don’t need to have a perfectly clear explanation for what’s wrong before reaching out.

What happens during the consultation?

You’ll start with a 20–30 minute phone or video consultation. It’s a chance to talk about what brings you in, ask questions, and see whether there’s a good match between what you’re looking for and what our clinicians offer.

How often do individual therapy sessions happen?

Individual therapy typically meets weekly in 50 to 53-minute sessions. Regular meetings give the work enough continuity to move beyond putting out fires and begin understanding and changing patterns over time.

What if I’ve been in therapy before and still feel stuck?

That’s not unusual. Sometimes insight alone doesn’t change a pattern, even when you understand it very well. Our work pays attention not only to what you know intellectually, but also to what happens in relationships, emotions, and the ways you’ve learned to protect yourself.

Do you offer in-person therapy?

Yes. Eureka offers in-person psychotherapy in San Francisco, as well as telehealth for clients located throughout California.

How will I know whether a therapist at Eureka is a good fit?

Fit can take a little time to understand. The consultation offers a starting point, and the first sessions give you and your clinician a fuller sense of how it feels to work together and whether the approach matches what you’re looking for.
